Torque Tip
Verifying the Assemblers and the Fastening Process

(continued)

The assembly person or tool operator is likely the most overlooked in creating quality through properly installed fasteners. The only cognitive part of the fastening process is the operator. Much information can be gained by intuitive feed back. However, proper training about torque control, the tool and the joint must be given to the operator to allow this data to be effectively collected or even recognized.

Each operator should be thoroughly trained as to detect improperly installed or failed fasteners. Each operator should know the number of fasteners to be installed and their workstations should be structured so that such data is easily collected or recognized.

The operator should have a sound working knowledge of an assembly tool and understand when it is or is not functioning correctly.
