The Significance of Quality Electronic Manufacturing Tools in Precision and Process Control

Synopsis

Details

Electronics are something we depend on every day as the digital age marches forward. And as the number of devices we enjoy in our daily lives goes up, the demand for quality electronics assembly also increases. As such, a global electronics contract manufacturer needs to meet the unique needs of every kind of electronics assembly.

In one Mountz customer’s US facility, they manufacture servers and routers for industry-leading companies, and some circuit boards can cost upwards of a million dollars apiece. Therefore, it’s absolutely essential that they have quality electronic manufacturing tools at every level of assembly. For this manufacturer—and for many others in electronic assembly and other industries—Mountz tools are an essential part of ensuring quality workmanship at every level.

Increasing Assurance in Critical Assembly Operations with Electronics Manufacturing Tools

The key to accurate compliance with electronic manufacturing specifications is thorough documentation. The torque applied to every screw and fastener in the assembly not only needs to be on spec but also recorded as being on spec. Previously, compliance and reporting was the responsibility of the individual operator, and it was easy for an operator on the assembly line to become distracted and release a tool before the fastening was fully completed. It was even possible for an operator to use the wrong bit by mistake.

Mountz provides a complete array of MD-Series DC control tools combined with an MDC Controller to ensure that the correct torque is achieved with every fastener tightened. DC control tools are reliable torque fastening systems that are engineered for precise, accurate, and repeatable torque control. MDC Controllers are easily programmed with fastening sequences and torque tolerances for each fastener in the sequence. The controller will not clear an assembly unless all the fastening operations have been completed to spec and in the correct sequence. These electronic manufacturing tools perform the work of multiple tools in one device and can effectively function as a quality control inspector at each assembly station.
“In addition to providing quality assurance, this new solution helps ensure operators have the bits they need when they need them. It’s virtually impossible for bits to walk off, saving time and money.” – Kristen Gilliam, Mountz Territory Sales Manager
Ensuring every torque tool operator used the right bit required a customized solution—specifically, a bit socket tray that connects directly to the MDC. The bit socket tray has sensors capable of detecting different colors of tape wrapped around each bit. This enables the international electronic manufacturer to equip each board with a barcode. When the board arrives, the operator can scan the barcode and know which bit to remove from the four position tray.

When the operator attaches this bit, the MDC automatically sets the tool for the correct torque specifications. If the operator should select an incorrect bit or fail to properly attach the bit, the DC assembly tool wouldn’t power up, preventing assembly errors. The assembly tray also ensures immediate access to the right bits at the right time, improving production efficiency. It eliminated the tendency for the assembler to lose bits and borrow replacements from other stations, which removes the costs of replacing bits that disappear into the ether.

Electronics Manufacturing Tools Create Assurance and Efficiency

In addition to limiting errors in assembly, the new solution also enables data capture throughout the assembly line. It’s easy to collect information about the amount of time that each circuit board spends at a station and the time it takes to fasten each individual fastener. This is important information that can be used for further improving assembly line production and informing future stage-by-stage assembly line design.

Electronics manufacturing is a field that requires fine precision at every level, and the most minor divergence from specifications can mean that a device will not function or develops a fault that is maddening to track down and fix. Electronics manufacturing tools must perform multiple tasks with unwavering accuracy in order for quality circuit boards, hard drives, and other electronic components and devices to function reliably. When setting up or improving electronics manufacturing assembly, turn to a tool manufacturer who understands the importance of being able to calculate and recalculate every step for reliability and efficiency.
