How a Torque Multiplier can Improve Quality in Heavy-Duty Manufacturing and Repair

Torque wrenches of various types assemble and repair the electronics and mechanical devices we use every day. These torque tools ensure that the fasteners that hold these products together are reliable throughout repeated use year after year. However, the industries that support our daily life—like oil and gas production, farming, water, and power—work with much greater pressures and contain far higher levels of force. The result is that the fasteners that hold industrial tractors and other vehicles, water and gas pipes, and the pipes that channel power generating steam require greater amounts of torque—far more than torque wrenches can provide on their own. Tightening these fasteners to specification requires a torque multiplier to amplify the force that torque wrenches put out. 

Hand torque multipliers work by multiplying the force exerted on a fastener. The torque multiplier fits over the fasteners, the torque wrench fits into the torque multiplier, and the multiplier magnifies the torque output of the wrench by a fixed ratio. These manual torque multipliers can magnify the torque output of a torque wrench by over a hundred times. Pneumatic torque multipliers and electric torque multipliers provide high levels of torque output without the need to use a torque wrench, which is ideal for production line assembly of heavy industrial vehicles and generators.

Hand Torque Multipliers Provide Force for Field Work

Many of the industries we depend on are far away from cities and reliable supplies of power. Oil and gas fieldwork, for instance, often takes place in remote areas, and pipelines can travel through thousands of miles of wilderness. These pipelines have pressures that average between 70 and 100 bars. One bar is the equivalent of 100,00 square newton meters of force. The fasteners that hold sections of high-pressure oil pipelines together require a great deal of torque to ensure that oil remains contained and flowing in the pipeline. The majority of these sections are in remote locations without access to power. Often, they have no ready transportation routes available to the site and must be accessed by helicopter or other means. 

In these remote locations, power tools are not an option for installation, maintenance, or repair. The flange bolts that hold sections of pipeline together can be in sizes up to 24 inches in diameter and have torque specifications of up to 40,000 lbf.ft (797 Nm2. ). High output hand torque multipliers coupled with torque wrenches can meet the high torque values, and because they do not require an external source of power, they are the ideal tools to use to tighten large size and high torque bolts at remote sites. Maintaining the trucks, tractors, and other heavy vehicles that are often needed at remote sites can be maintained by lighter weight hand torque multipliers that are more manageable for tightening wheel nuts and other heavy-duty vehicle fasteners. These vehicles, of course, are made with these fasteners, and pneumatic and electric torque multipliers speed production on the assembly line.

Pneumatic and Electric Torque Multipliers Work More Quickly than Manual Multipliers

Pneumatic torque multipliers provide high levels of torque with speed and accuracy you can depend on. They have several advantages over other pneumatic torque tools like impact guns. Pneumatic torque multipliers have a smooth, continuous rotation compared to impact wrenches,  helping operators avoid the muscle, bone, joint and hearing injuries associated with impact tools. An automatic shut off when the pre-set torque value is achieved helps to prevent damage to the fastener or the joint it holds. Pneumatic torque multipliers help speed up production by reducing fatigue and damage to fasteners and joints during assembly. 

Electric torque multipliers share these advantages and have a higher degree of precision than pneumatic torque multipliers. They have intuitive-to-use, built-in controllers that make them easier to operate and reduces the training time needed to get employees used to working with the torque multiplier, decreasing the chances of operator error. This helps ensure that heavy industrial equipment is built exactly to specifications and that industrial vehicles and equipment can be relied on when they are deployed in the field. Pneumatic and electric torque multipliers can also be used outside of the factory with the proper support. A generator or a compressed air tank can speed up the maintenance and assembly of field projects like pipeline work or the maintenance of wind turbine gearboxes. 
  
Torque and meeting torque specifications is just as important for a large diameter heavy fastener as it is for a more average-sized bolt or screw. Tightening these fasteners to the often quite high torque levels required calls for accurate hand, pneumatic, and electric torque multipliers. These heavy-duty fasteners stand between us and oil spills and blackouts. That makes it critical to choose quality torque multipliers with a precision that can be relied upon time after time.
